Makeup Beginner 101: Starter Kit

(from left to right top to bottom:  Shu Uemura Nobara cover stick, Burberry velvet foundation, Charmzone DeAge lose powder, Anna Sui lip gloss, Canmake Perfect Brown Eyes eyeshadow, Chanel Crayon Sourcils eyebrow sculpting pencil, Majolica Majorca Perfect Automatic Liner)

One of the main purposes of makeup is to enhance a person's own natural beauty while giving confidence throughout the day. Looking at all the products in the market sure if fun, but it can also be hard to decide on what to buy when your first starting out with your makeup collection. From my personal experience, a starter makeup kit should consist of the following to achieve natural beauty.

 (from left to right)
Concealer: (Shu Uemura Nobara cream cover stick) The purpose of concealer is to cover up imperfections such as acne, scars and dark eye circles. The key is to use in moderation and to use a shade lighter than your natural skin tone to cover dark eye circles. I personally find that concealer blends better when applied before foundation.

Foundation: (Burberry velvet foundation) Foundation is to even out the skin tone while making it look flawless. To select a shade that matches your skin tone, you should swatch it on your jawline area to see if it matches with your neck color. Alternatively you could always ask a sales associate for help when you are selecting your foundation of choice. Many different finishes  (dewy, matte, satin etc), coverages (sheer, medium, full) and types (powder, cream, liquid) are available and you may want to experiment with them before buying. I personally like a liquid foundation with a semi-matt finish and medium coverage. As foundation is a huge topic, I will discuss it in more detail in future posts.

Lose powder: (Charmzone DeAge Red-addiction Face Powder) Lose powder really does help your base makeup stay on longer. These are usually provide sheer or transparent  matte coverage and is applied after foundation to set it, while absorbing excess oil. I personally apply more of it on my T-zone (nose, forehead and chin area) as that is where i tend to get oily.

Lip gloss: (Anna Sui lip gloss) These provide sheer color and help create dimension to lips by providing a beautiful sheen. I personally would say that they double up both as a lipstick and lip balm, since they provide color while moisturizing. Wide color selections are available but my favourite shades are those of light pinks, as they provide natural color.

Eyebrow pencil: (Chanel Crayon Sourcils eyebrow sculpting pencil) Sculpting eyebrows are very important as they frame your face. Applying in light feathering strokes with  a color that is one or two shades which is lighter than your hair color gives the most natural look in my opinion.

Eyeliner: (Majolica Majorca Perfect Automatic Liner) Eyeliner helps to bring the distance between eyelashes and eyelid. They intensify the eye and various different looks can be achieved with eyeliner. There are many different types of eyeliners in the market (liquid, pencil, cake, powder, cream, gel etc) and since it is such a huge topic, I will get into more detail in upcoming posts.  I personally prefer liquid eyeliner as they tend to smudge less and can really draw a thin line.

Eyeshadow: (Canmake Perfect Brown Eyes eyeshadow, refer to top photo) I would say that eyeshadow adds dimension to the eyes while giving color. There are various color combinations in the market and you may want to swatch them to see which colors compliment your eyes the best. I think that brown shades help to contour and give a natural look.

Well, here is my advice on how to build a starter makeup kit and I hope it helped. Makeup is fun and it also takes practice to achieve, I hope you found my post informative and have  had as much fun as me writing this post. I will be uploading some tutorials for how to create a natural "no-makeup" makeup look soon. Stay tuned! :)
