Makeup Beginner 101: Eyeliner

Eyeliners are one of my favourite makeup products, they add drama, intensity and emphasis to every makeup look. Easily becoming one of the most valuable assets in your makeup collection, eyeliner defines your eye while it creates an illusion of fuller lashes and brings the distance between the eyelid and lashes closer. Depending on how the liner is drawn, dramatic looks or natural looks can accomplished, even creating the illusion of wider and longer eyes. Eyeliner is available in many different colors and formulas;  in this post I will be discussing the different types of eyeliner and my opinion upon them.

Pencil Eyeliner: Pencil eyeliners come in a variety of shades and are smudge-able to create a very natural look. Both waterproof and non-waterprof formulas are available but i personally prefer waterproof as they stay on longer. When selecting a pencil eyeliner, it would be advisable to select a creamy formula that goes on smoothly on your lids which will not tug upon them. This is also the best option for beginners, as pencils are easy to control and to practice using them will help achieve a steady hand while lining. Waterproof pencils are also very effective in water-lining (lining of the lower eye) and may be used for the upper eyelid too.

Cream/ gel liner: Cream/gel liners are very pigmented and is applied using a eyeliner brush.  (I perfer an angled one as it can achieve smooth and thin lines.) Only a tiny bit of product should be applied to each eye, and can be builded on upon if more pigment is desired. Although this takes a bit of practice to master, the vast amount of colors of cream/gel liners can used to create a thin natural eye-line or a bold and dramatic look. (It is personally my favourite type of liner). They are extremely long lasting and should be set with a lose powder after application to ensure they dont crease and smudge. This type of eyeliner is usually waterproof. These are ideal for lining the upper eyelid and (depending on preference , the lower eyelid too.

Liquid eyeliner: Liquid eyeliner can create beautiful, thin, precise and deeply pigmented opaque lines. The liquid formula may be a little hard to apply at first, but practice makes perfect. The way that i learned to apply liquid liner is to first draw a line with pencil and practice going over that line with liquid eyeliner until I could freely line my eyes without having the pencil base. Liquid eyeliners come in 2 types, ones that are shaped like pens and ones that you have to dip your brush into before applying (as pictured above). Most liquid liners are waterproof and stay on for long hours, depending on the formula. They are ideal for lining the upper eyelid.

Powder eyeliner: Powder eyeliner usually create softer lines that can be smudged to create either a natural or smokey look. I usually just apply eyeshadow (as picture above) using an angled liner brush for this; there are also powders exclusively made for lining in the market. Shadows and powder eyeliners are generally good for lining the whole eye and may also be applied using a wet brush to create a bolder line (depending on if your eyeshadow is ment for wet application).

I hope my description of different kinds of eyeliner has been informative. All of the above is based on my own personal opinion and it is important to test a liner before committing  as all formulas are different and performance varies amongst different people. If you have any questions or want reviews for any of the eyeliners I posted above, feel free to post them in the comments section. I will be posting a tutorial with more detail on how to use these eyeliners soon, so stay tuned :)
